lesson plan

My year 2/3 are doing a unit of work titled "Camping"
I will design my lesson following this theme. I will design the first lessont hat will involve the most ICT use.
The children will work in groups of 4x8 in each.
Plan: length 35mins.
K.L.A's: ICT, Literacy, design, numeracy and S.O.C.E.
This lesson plan will involve the ICT and literacy component of the total KLA's to be used during the unit.
Declarative knowledge:
The children have basic typing skills and internet searching.
Procedural; Ways of working
The children will brows the internet to discover the national parks located in Bundaberg.
They will download the information including a map of the area of their chosen park (for the purpose of this lesson will be MONREPO) They will search for the river nearest to Monrepo. (This will be the Burnett River) They will research the fish and other species of animals living in the river and the national park.
To complete this task the students would have to use typing skills showing correct spelling for searched topics. They will record there information in a word document. They will print out their documents and file and add to as the lessons progress.
Outcomes for this lesson will be an understanding of the internet and it's value. They will have an understanding of how to brows the net and what key words for the search are needed. They will be able to open and use a word document. The teacher will have to send the documents to the printer as this will be the printer used for the whole school. search engines that could be used are Google earth, for the map and location of the park and rivers.

Google Earth

Google Earth as a teaching tool has endless possibility. This tool could be used in the teaching of SOSE where the children could explore Australia in real time We could visit Ayers Rock, looking at the pictures, maps surrounds the different colours the rock exposes. This site provides maps of the area. Another area this tool could be used is maths. We could google our school and look at the buildings and measure the area and perimeter of the buildings. A lesson for literacy could be when we visit a small country of the world and compare the size and cultural difference we could design a postcard and write a greeting on the back this would involve two KLAs writing and creative arts. This site could also be just for fun.

Poetry PowerPoint

For a preview of the presentation, please refer to be below object. For the full PowerPoint presentation with animations, please download and view using PowerPoint. You will need to download the Part 1 and Part 2 movie clips in order for the videos to work.

Poetry for Lower Primary

The purpose of this lesson is to teach the students the difference between a story and a poem.
After speaking with children of different ages but all primary age, they stated that poetry was not such an exciting subject because the teacher just said the poem and they discussed the words that rhymed. I decided to make my power point on poetry with a difference and try to engage the students and gain their interest and the result will be a positive learning experience with the use of rhyming words. And the students would have learnt a couple of poems and the difference between a story and a poem (There would be hand out of the complete poem) They will understand that a poem can be story using rhyming words. The student would be asked to make there own short poem.
The steps for my power point.
1. I chose the poems about Butterfly and Caterpillars from the website referenced This website allows the use of the poems for education purposes.
2. I chose pictures from clip art (these are royalty free)
3. I also downloaded a picture of a butterfly that I could turn into a moving animated butterfly I also downloaded multiple pictures of a caterpillar hatching .that I turned into a movie using Window movie maker.
4. The effects I installed to enhance my slides were from customise animation ie. grow/shrink, fly out, float, boomerang, pin-wheel and ease out.
5. The power point was then uploaded to my blog once as a preview as a still slide show using power point presentation 97/2003. so that google Doc's would allow me to embed the presentation to my blog. Then I linked to the original power point by uploading it then getting the link to share. Both are now on my blog to view. One acts as a preview and the other is the one I would use as my presentation for the class with discussion on the poems.
I enjoyed this activity very much I loved making the power point and I feel comfortable using power point as a teaching tool. This tool can be adapted to any subject .I think the hook for the lesson can be made very creative and with more experience and practice of making and adding effects to my power point I will be able to have longer and more in-depth presentations.
Therefore in this activity I have learnt to make a power point make pictures into movies upload to my blog and use a link.

Edited image from Picnik

I used the wonderful free easy-to-use image editor Picnik, and attached these images to demonstrate what it can do!

First I uploaded an image to Picnik in order to have a image to work on. I then proceeded to edit the image by cropping, rotating and using the one-click Auto Fix feature. Next, I went into the create tab and selected the 'Boost' effect to enhance the colour of the image. I then saved the image and uploaded it the blog, as you can see below. I have also included the original image so you can see a before and after shot for comparison.
This would be a fun lesson for students they could become very creative in design and application. The students could create cards for mothers day and fathers day etc. This lesson could involve the use of two K.L.As. literacy and art.

My Synopsis

My Reflective Synopsis.

I am currently a student at C.Q. University studying for a graduate diploma of learning and teaching. Included in this course is ICTs for learning and design. My reflection for this course is as follows.

I have found this ICT learning journey to be very challenging, frustrating at times and a very steep learning curve. I started this course with a very basic knowledge of technology and what technology there is available. This experience has been a big WOW factor, the more I delve into this world of technology the more fascinating it becomes. I was a little put off by the amount of material on line and did not know where to start. Being a flex student I have found it even more of a challenge. I think I would benefit more with face to face teaching in this subject. Sometimes you feel you are out in cyberspace all by yourself. With the pressure and time frames of completing the necessary task for this subject and the other three subjects associated with this course it has indeed been a challenge.

After the initial shock I settled into and tackled this course head on and with a positive attitude. Today's students and more importantly students of the future will embrace this technology with open arms and minds. It is the way forward; computers will be the new blackboard of the class room. The pedagogy strategies we have discussed during this course so far all relate to engaging the student and having lessons be student focused and not teacher focused. I think by embracing and developing, better and more in-depth technology skills, the journey will become easier and more rewarding. The students will have more control over their learning experience.

Research is made easier by the use of the internet, there is nothing that cannot be googled. Communication sources are multiplying, first I learnt to email and I thought that was fantastic. Now I have three blogs and a wiki site that I am able to communicate with anyone around the world who cares to view these sites. I also have designed a power point for this blog site and have added an Avatar just for fun. The link to my power point is available through this blog. Power point display can be made to cater for any subject; it can involve some very dynamic approaches. They can be as long or short as you need them to be, they can become very eye catching with the use of colours and pictures to enhance the subject matter. The use of icons in your power point can remind the young students of the focus of the topic. For example, a study of 'The Life Cycle of Frogs' would have pictures of frogs on every slide.

The use of blogs as stated on this site under ‘creating my blog’ is an effective tool for the students to communicate with each other and to share their ideas and to learn from each other. Blogs can be made private or public and can invite followers to comment on the postings you make on the blog. The blog also provides a means to learn from one another. Another form of communication I was introduced to is the use of discussion forums. I have found this very useful and helpful. I have been able to support my peers when needed. I have been able to access this forum to communicate and discuss a range of topics an involving a number of subjects. This form of communicating was made readily available by the lecturer as part of the topic discussion and reflections. I have enjoyed being able to respond and evaluate my peers thoughts and discussions on the forums. I am aware of the improvement of the skills of myself and my peers with being able to use this technology. I reflect on my early entries where I was a bit anxious about the tasks that lay ahead. There were many entries posing help questions and wanting advise on set up steps for the blogs, wiki and Mahara etc.

As posted on this blog under My Mahara I have stated the difficulties I found with Mahara I would like to again emphasise that Mahara is an extremely valuable e. Journal for any chosen career path. This tool can grow with me - I can build up an enormous amount of resources and have this resource saved in one place in one filling system. My Mahara e.Journal will create for me a resume that will enable me to produce a full account of my experience and learnt skills to any employment interview I may encounter. All of the above mentioned tools will advantage me and my students in our learning journey.

In conclusion, I believe the use of technology can be used to enhance any curriculum. Technology will increase the knowledge of the teacher and the student by the open playing field that is available to all. Technology will advantage any student or teacher promoting a real and successful learning journey. The inclusion of technology in lesson planning assists the teacher in engaging the students making outcomes superior and creates a higher order of thinkers. Technology will stretch the imagination of all who use it. Technology allows the user to be creative, imaginative and well rehearsed in planning and executing the lesson. Technology producers a vast range of information to support, improve and advance the knowledge that is to be imparted to any student.

Mahara

This was a challenge of the very worst kind This is an excellent tool as a resume but it is very complicated in it's design set up. It seem to repeat the steps and the aim become a maze. In theory I can follow in practicle I need more time and having time contraints and this is not the only subject I am needed to be focused on I found it a great time consumer.
Mahara is desinged to grow with your journey to add as you go. I understand how valuable this eJournal will be at the compleation of this course having all that I am and all that I have become in one area to produce at any interview I may attend. I don't really see the need to spend and have the added stress of learning this site in six weeks. I will attempt to compleate all tasks asked of me But I know I will be adding and dressing up MY MAHARA at a much later date.

My Wiki

I enjoyed making my wiki. This tool could be used for creative writing with your students. They will learn computer skills and become more creative with their writing skills. Wiki was easy to set up three easy steps I just did that magic google, and followed the steps. for this assignment I compiled an entry on Depression in the Elderly. This is a subject close to my heart.

Creating My Blog

I found creating
a blog following Scott's Videos on setting up a blog. Very informative and helpful ie view and create putting myself as the student this would Relate create and donate.this way of teaching connects to the engagement theory. Blogging also helps establish peer support. Blogging from a students point of view enables the students to be able to communicate with other students and evaluate their work. It could also be used as a study tool.

This is a picture of me at the fun park in Beijing China on our world trip 2009.

The New World

The new world is fast becoming the old world. The environment of technology changes very fast. I remember when I started to e mail I thought WOW! Now I am blogging to the whole world. I know longer live in a small town, I am part of the world. I can experience much more in a short space of cyber time than all of my 53yrs so far This is incredible .
I started this journey, very excited with great hopes and dreams. One day in and I was stumbling in the dark, I was scared, my hopes and dreams were squashed. My choice was simple sink or swim. I am dog paddling at the moment but I am still afloat.
The new economy THE KNOWLEDGE ECONOMY is the future. We have to be able to sell our selves and prove that you have the skills to do the job. Teachers will need computer skills so they can groom their students to be capable to join this knowledge economy. A line from the Dept of Labour Report stated "The continued evolution of technology affects both existing and emerging jobs"(labour day report 1999).
An important change in the way education is administered is to turn it around from being teacher centric to student focused. This is a mighty step forward.

My boomarang effect.

I have been reading literature for weeks, on how to teach effectively.
The first thing I have learnt is that teachers MUST be for the student. this must be the focus.
I said in a very early forum entry that I thought gathering a comprehensive profile on each student is an important first step to becoming student centred. I fully believe that a holistic approach to teaching will benefit all. Parents will feel they still have a roll in their children's education and personal development. Children will feel empowered to take control of there learning journey. Teachers will have an understanding of where there student is and where he/she would like to be. I have called this entry the boomerang effect because of how you design the lessons will the effect how you throw the information at your students and . will effect how it is returned to you. We must use all the technology that is within our reach. This is their world their norm or will become their norm. Pedagogy is a science so we should take the scientific approach.
Knowing you can help shape the future carries an enormous responsibility and requires a great amount of skill and diversity. This is also true when you are designing and learning to throw a boomerang.

learning journey

I have been crawling through this course mostly with fear. This is all so new to me. I am enjoying the content of the material very much. I f can master this new technology I know i will enjoy my new roll. I believe that the computer is the new pencil and chalk of the very near future and we must be able to keep up.
The teaching strategies for the modern teacher and student will be made more real with the availability of online exploration on any topic they have. It gives the student ownership of their work. Technology does give a more equal study field. It enables the teacher and student better understanding of a prescribed topic by the vast number of research sites. It allows students to gain valued support from their peers. The forum sites can be a great learning tool.
I am hoping to be able to upload some videos and pictures to my blog.
